The Nau Civil War Center held its second annual Summer Teacher Seminar this June. Twenty-four middle school and high school teachers from across the country travelled to UVA for the week-long seminar, which was directed by Gary W. Gallagher and Caroline E. Janney. The participants discussed the centrality of slavery, the often-blurry relationship between battlefront and home front, the questions left unresolved by the conflict, and the ways Americans have contested the war’s memory.
Thank you to Lois MacMillan for helping coordinate the seminar and to Ed Donnellan and Larry Dorenkamp for delivering superb presentations on pedagogy and student research!
