New Historical Marker Honoring James T. S. Taylor
On Friday, November 21 at 11am, the Nau Center and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources will unveil a new state historical marker honoring James T. S. Taylor! The unveiling ceremony is open to the public and will take place at the 1st Street entrance to Oakwood Cemetery.
Taylor grew up in Charlottesville and served as a sergeant in the 2nd USCT Infantry during the Civil War. He later became a leader in Charlottesville’s Republican Party, and he was a delegate to the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1867-68. The Nau Center has documented Taylor's story as part of our Black Virginians in Blue digital project, which highlights the 260 Black men from Albemarle County who served in the Union military. Join us on November 21 to learn more about Taylor's life and legacy!
