Kate Schneider Publishes Civil War Memory Website

Wednesday, January 13, 2021

For her final project for Nau Center Director Caroline E. Janney's HIUS 4511 Civil War in Myth and Memory fall 2020 course, UVA student Kate Schneider created a website about the memory of the American Civil War at UVA. The site explores such topics as the Confederate cemetery on grounds, buildings named after Confederate veterans, the Frank Hume Memorial Fountain, and the Confederate plaques that were removed from the Rotunda in 2017. The site serves as a thorough introduction to how Civil War history, specifically the experiences of Confederate students and faculty and the post-war "Lost Cause" version of events, has been commemorated and celebrated at UVA.

Schneider is currently a third-year student from Fairfax, Virginia, majoring in History with a minor in Public Policy and Leadership. After graduating in 2022, she plans to stay for a fifth year to earn a Master of Teaching (M.T.) degree from UVA's School of Education with an endorsement in Social Studies Education.
