
On Thursday, October 23, Professor Elizabeth Varon will moderate "Conservatives and the Challenge of Compromise in the Civil War Era," a discussion with historians Jack Furniss, Jesse George-Nichol, and Ian Iverson. The event will take place at 5pm in UVA's Small Special Collections Library, and it will be free and open to the public.
Dr. Furniss will discuss his book, Between Extremes: Seeking the Political Center in the Civil War North (LSU Press 2024). Dr. George-Nichol will discuss her book, Conservative Americanism: Nativism, Unionism, and Slavery in Border South Politics, 1854-1861 (Lexington Books, 2024). Dr. Iverson will discuss his book, Holding the Political Center in Illinois: Conservatism and Union on the Brink of the Civil War (Kent State University Press, 2024).
