Walking Tour: Freedom and Liberation Day

On Saturday, March 2, 9:00 AM, a “Monticello to Main Street” walking tour will begin at Court Square, and tell the story of local freedmen and their descendants who lived and worked downtown. At 10:30 AM, the tour will reach the Jefferson School, 233 4th Street, NW, where refreshments will be served and local researchers will make presentations about the history of end of the Civil War in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Speakers will include the Nau Center's William Kurtz and Ervin Jordan as well as Dean Kirt Von Daacke. The event will conclude with the announcement of the winners of the Charlottesville High School students awardees of the “Charlottesville Community Remembrance Project” essay contest. The event is free and open to the public.
