The Nau Center extends its congratulations to Elizabeth R. Varon, Langbourne M. Williams Professor of History at the University of Virginia and member of the Center's Executive Council, for winning the 2020 Lincoln Prize bestowed annually by Gettysburg College and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Her book, Armies of Deliverance: A New History of the Civil War (Oxford University Press, 2019), was selected for this honor out of eight finalists for this prestigious book prize in Civil War history.

From Gilder Lehrman's website:

"Varon finds a fresh interpretation of familiar events in the concept of ‘deliverance,’ an understanding of the war that fused religious, political, economic, and moral determination,” wrote the jury in their report to the board. “Varon’s mastery of every aspect of the Civil War makes this the most complete, balanced, and up-to-date synthesis of the nation’s defining conflict.”

More information about the 2020 award and a full list of finalists can be found on the Gilder Lehrman Institute's website linked below.
