The Nau Center and UVA’s Civil War PhD alumni will be out in force at this year’s Society of Civil War Historians Conference in Pittsburgh (May 31-June 2, 2018).
On Friday morning, 2018 graduate Lauren N. Haumesser and Professor Brian D. Schoen (PhD 2003) will take part in the panel, “Envisioning Secession & War: Time, Space, Language & the Coming of the Civil War.” At a concurrent panel, Professor Kathryn S. Meier (PhD 2010) and Peter C. Luebke (PhD 2014) will take part in a panel titled, “The Rise of Historical Authority in Military Writing.”
On Saturday morning, Professors Amy M. Taylor (PhD 2001) and Aaron Sheehan-Dean (PhD 2003) will provide comments on a panel titled, “Recasting Perceptions of Loyalty: Cultural Cartographers, Bitter Brothers, and Determined Democrats in the Civil War Era.”
On Saturday afternoon, Professor Rachel Shelden (PhD 2011) will chair and comment on a panel titled, “Emotions in Motion: The Power of Feeling in the Civil War Era.” At a concurrent panel, Nau Center board member Jonathan W. White will take part in a panel titled, “The New Civil War Revisionism Twenty Years Later: A Panel in Honor of Edward L. Ayers.” Also at the same time, new Nau Center Director Caroline E. Janney (PhD 2005) will provide comments on a panel titled, “Paths to Peace: Reconsidering the ‘Long Civil War.’” Professor Wayne Hsieh (PhD 2004) will also present a paper at this panel.
