UVA Law Professor Cynthia Nicoletti, an affiliated faculty member of the Nau Center, has just published a new book on the post-war trial of Confederate President Jefferson Davis for treason.  Secession on Trial: The Treason Prosecution of Jefferson Davis (Cambridge 2017) has received glowing advance praise and is now available for purchase. For a summary of her book, please see the UVA Law School website.

Last week, Professor Nicoletti also gave a talk at the U.S. Supreme Court about Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase and his decision in Texas v. White (1869). Chase famously declared that the “Constitution, in all its provisions, looks to an indestructible Union composed of indestructible States.” To read a summary of her remarks, please check out Scotusblog.com.
