The Nau Center at SCWH 2016 Conference

The Nau Center and UVA will be out in force at the upcoming Society of Civil War Historians 2016 Conference in Chattanooga, TN, from Thursday, June 2 to Saturday, June 4.

Nau Center board member and current SCWH president, Dr. Caroline E. Janney, will welcome everyone to the conference on Thursday, June 2.

On Friday, June 3, board member Dr. Thavolia Glymph will preside over a panel that will feature UVA graduate student Frank Cirillo presenting a paper entitled, “‘The Power of Civilized Warriors to Unmake Slaves’: White Abolitionists and the Emancipation Process, 1861–1862.” Board Member Dr. Kathryn Shively Meier, Virginia Commonwealth University, will chair a panel titled, “Re-Mapping War: Spatial Understandings of the Civil War-era.” Just before lunch, Dr. Michael T. Caires, University of Virginia, will present his paper on finances during the war, “Rejecting Greenbacks: The Politics of Paper Money in Civil War California.” On the same panel, UVA graduate student Jack Furniss will present his paper, “Civil Wars: Union Governors and Federal-State Conflict in the North.”

On Saturday, June 4, affiliated faculty member Dr. Cynthia Nicoletti, University of Virginia,  School of Law, will comment on the panel, “Echoes of Battle: State Power in the Aftermath of the Civil War.” Dr. Elizabeth Varon, Associate Director of the Nau Center, will also comment on a panel, “‘One of the Bloodiest the World Has Ever Seen’: Rethinking Anticipations of the Civil War.”

Many alumni of the UVA doctoral program will also be at the SWCH conference, including Drs. Anne Sarah Rubin, Brian Schoen, Scott Nesbit, Kanisorn Wongsrichanalai, William Link, Andre Fleche, and Amy Murrell Taylor.
